This is Your New FM, a blog about radio from the eyes of a young’un entering the business. I’ll be covering my discoveries and experiences so far in radio, major radio news, local Boston news, AAA news, artist/music updates, and some more cultural topics. I hope to bring up some interesting talking points and visions of the new radio.
As you and your grandmother know, radio is in a major crunch for consumer ear time and ad dollars right now. This is a critical time in radio’s life. Many critics have all ready thrown radio to the scrap heap along with the newspapers. If we do pass up the new opportunities presented to us by technology and social media, our industry will quickly become irrelevant. Is that a little scary? Sure. However I think it’s a pretty exciting time for radio too.
I’ll save the rest of the bright eyed optimism from this young guy for now. You know the problems, but there are solutions out there that need to be harnessed now. This will create your new FM.
As for me, I’m Kevin McCaul. I’m an Emerson College second semester senior with a concentration in radio and a minor in marketing. I am the Program Director for our AAA non-commercial station, 88.9 WERS and wers.org (get used to that tagline). I’ve spent some time at CBS with WZLX and with Entercom working for MIKE FM and WAAF. I love radio, technology, and business. I’m also sure I haven’t made a mistake with my career of choice.
Thanks for your eyeballs and expect some more content. I’ll be going to Las Vegas for the New Years but I’ll be observing my friends and covering why they listen to Top 40 and sing “Party In The U.S.A.” Hopefully I’ll figure that one out.
